Robert A. Eppley, M.D.


Dr. Eppley is a board certified Orthopaedic Surgeon and a Qualified Medical Examiner, who has specialized in injuries to the shoulder and knee since 1990. He is the primary orthopaedic surgeon for the University of California at Berkeley athletic teams, including sideline coverage and travel with the CAL football team for many years.  Dr. Eppley is the Chief of Orthopedics for the CAL Student Health Service and Chief of Orthopedics for Sports Medicine at CAL.


He is a nationally recognized leader in shoulder and knee surgery. Dr. Eppley has lectured, published and instructed many surgical teaching laboratories nationally.

Dr. Eppley performs arthroscopic and open surgeries of the shoulder and knee, including acl reconstruction, meniscus repairs, microfracture, osteochondral grafts, tibial tubercle osteotomy, lateral release, bankart repairs, rotator cuff tendon repairs,  ac repairs, open reduction internal fixation of the clavicle and humerus and partial replacement of the knee and shoulder, total shoulder replacement, as well as resurfacing of the humeral head and reverse shoulder replacement.


His peers have repeatedly voted Dr. Eppley to “The Bay Areas Best Doctors” by Focus magazine and “Best of the Bay”, by San Francisco magazine, "One of San Francisco's Top Doctors". He is also listed as one of the "Top Doctors in America" and "One of the Best Doctors in America".

Dr. Eppley has been honored by his patients with a Patients' Choice recognition.  There is nothing more rewarding then to be honored and highly regarded by the patients. In fact, of the nation's 720,000 active physicians, less than 5% were accorded this honor by their patients in 2008.

 
He was also invited to be a master surgeon at the Orthopaedic Academy Learning Center in Illinois.


Dr. Eppley attended Swarthmore College and Yale University followed by medical school at Case Western Reserve University in Ohio, where he graduated with honors.


He completed
7 years of surgical residency and fellowship at Case Western Reserve University, Harvard, Tufts and UCLA. Dr. Eppley is an Aufranc fellow from the prestigious Baptist Hospital in Boston, where he was trained in Total Joint Replacement.

Dr. Eppley competed in the Ohio regional tennis competition and played college basketball. He currently lives in Orinda with his wife Karen and children Sarah, Emma and Robert.
